As a student at Cornell University, she wrote and presented a radio program about bird biology. She guided trips and trained teachers for the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Her love of the sea drew her to ships, where she taught and guided on voyages to the Caribbean, South Pacific, Central America and the Amazon

When she joined Quark Expeditions, Susan added the high latitudes of the Canadian, American and Russian Arctic, as well as the those of the Antarctic to list of remote regions in which has shared her knowledge.

Susan is Senior Expedition Leader and adviser to Quark Expeditions helping to identify and train future leaders and educators.

Susan is leading the Northeast Passage and Arctic Islands expeditions in the boreal summer of 2008.
